Disk Optikal Kapasitas 1TB dipamerkan oleh TDK

Pada pameran CEATEC baru-baru ini di Jepang, TDK memamerkan prototipe cakram optik dengan kapasitas 1TB. Teknik ini dilakukan dengan membuat 16 lapisan perekaman pada medium, masing-masing dengan kapasitas 32GB. Sebagai perbandingan, disc Blu-ray memiliki kapasitas 25GB atau 50GB (dual layer) dan maksimum empat lapisan.

Disk ini memiliki transmittance cahaya yang sangat tinggi, dengan 95,1 persen untuk setiap lapisan dan 72,6 persen untuk seluruh disk. Bagian dari bahan yang digunakan untuk penciptaan dari disk baru ini sudah digunakan untuk media Blu-ray, sehingga daya tahan sudah terbukti, kata seorang wakil dari TDK.
Kecepatan membaca dari disk baru juga dikatakan identik dengan Blu-ray juga, sementara tingkat simbol kesalahan untuk membaca data yang keluar berkisar antara 1 x 10-5 untuk 1 x 10-4, atau cukup rendah untuk produksi komersial . Ketebalan adalah salah satu kekurangan yang perlu ditangani. Lapisan rekaman Blu-ray perlu 100μm atau kurang, sedangkan disk TDK adalah 260μm tebal, menyebabkan penyimpangan lensa optik.
TDK mengatakan membutuhkan dukungan dari pembuat disc lain sebelum dapat mengkomersialisasikan media disk terbaru ini, dengan aplikasi yang diharapkan untuk backup, digunakan dalam penyiaran maupun recording di rumah.

Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Telah Dirilis Tanggal 10-10-2010

Para pengguna Ubuntu, setelah tiga versi Alpha, satu beta dan satu versi rilis kandidat , akhirnya Canonical  mengumumkan bahwa Ubuntu 10.10 telah dirilis, pada tanggal 10 Oktober, dan sudah tersedia di mirror di seluruh dunia.

Toshiba mengklaim terobosan penyimpanan data

Toshiba akan detail terobosan dalam penyimpanan data kemudian hari Rabu bahwa ia mengatakan membuka jalan bagi hard drive dengan kapasitas jauh lebih tinggi dari hari ini.

Adobe AIR Android jatuh tempo pada akhir tahun ini

Linux Ubuntu akan Mendukung MultiTouch

Acer Debuts New Dual Android, Windows XP Netbook

Acer's latest crack at combining Google's Android mobile software and Microsoft's Windows XP OS in the same netbook was unveiled at a computer show in Taipei on Thursday.
The Acer Aspire One AOD255 netbook uses Android as a quick-booting operating system and then Windows as the main operating system. Acer software on the device, called Acer Configuration Manager for Android, controls which OS will boot.
The netbook sports a 10.1-inch screen and has Intel's Atom N450 microprocessor inside. It carries 1GB of DDR2 (double data rate, second generation) DRAM as well as a 160GB hard disk drive (HDD) for storage. The device comes with a 3-cell lithium-ion battery, but Acer also sells a 6-cell battery for an additional NT$3,000 (US$95), a salesman said.
The device is being sold at the computer exhibition for NT$9,500, around US$300, but this is a special price for computer show attendees only. The list price on information handed out at the show is NT$11,900, around US$375.
People attending the Taipei Computer Applications Show, which runs through the weekend, will be able to order the device on Thursday and pick it up Friday. A salesman at the booth did not know when the device will be formally launched on world markets.

Windows 7 Tablets: Just Say No, Microsoft

Microsoft is busy at work on a new tablet computer design, a product that may arrive from one or more of its hardware partners in "not a heck of a long time," CEO Steve Ballmer told analysts on Thursday.
With the early success of the Apple iPad--more than 3 million sales and counting--and a batch of Android tablets scheduled to arrive by the end of the year, Microsoft is coming to the party late. True, Redmond has toyed with tablet PCs for years, including long-forgotten experiments such as the Toshiba Portege M205-S810 laptop/slate hybrid, but it's still a no-show in the iPad era. This will soon change, however.
Desktop to Tablet
Unfortunately, Microsoft plans to retrofit Windows 7 to run on slates. While Win 7 is a fine operating system for conventional PCs, it was never designed for touch input, a shortcoming that makes it inherently clunky for the new breed of touchscreen tablets.
To be fair, Windows 7 does include Windows Touch, an interface overlay that allows you to use multitouch finger gestures--the flicks and taps familiar to smartphone users--on a Win 7 tablet. But touch input isn't a particularly efficient way to navigate the Windows UI, which was designed for mice and keyboards.
The Windows Start button, desktop icons, and application menus were designed for the mouse and cursor, not the less-precise movements of the finger. I'm writing this blog post in Office 2007, and the ribbon interface above the text window is packed with feature options that are spaced too closely together for touch input, particularly on the relatively small (e.g. 10-inch) screens we're likely to see on most Windows 7 tablets. Similarly, how well would touch work with a complex spreadsheet in Excel? Again, touch's lack of precision isn't a good match for much of today's business software.
There's always the option of an external keyboard for Windows 7 tablets, something akin to what iPad users have for iWork and other productivity apps. And Microsoft may very well introduce a modified version of Office exclusively for tablets.
But wouldn't a mobile OS be a better fit for slates? Apple went that route with the iPad, which uses the iOS (iPhone OS)--built from the ground up for touch--rather than the Mac's desktop-bound OS X. Google took a similar route: Android OS is designed especially for finger-friendly mobile devices.
There's also the question of Windows 7's power consumption on a tablet. Could a Windows tablet running a power-hungry desktop OS match the iPad's 10-hour battery life? The verdict's still out, but I suspect the answer isn't pretty.
And then there's speculation that last week's agreement between Microsoft and chipmaker ARM may mean that Redmond still intends to build a tablet OS based on its Windows Phone 7 mobile software, a seemingly logical move that would mimic Apple's and Google's approach to slates.
Could that be Microsoft's ultimate goal? Is Windows 7 an interim tablet OS, soon to be replaced by Windows Phone 7? I suspect that's the case. After all, the desktop version of Windows has failed before in the tablet market. It's likely to fail again.

Linux Foundation Offers Open Source Compliance Checklist

Organizations that are interested in using open source in their own products but are wary of intellectual property issues might want to examine a new, mostly free, assistance program just launched by the non-profit Linux Foundation.
The Open Compliance Program includes an assessment checklist, training programs and software tools to monitor open source software usage.
Especially in the growing field of mobile device and consumer electronics manufacturers, software development often involves use of multiple programs -- many open source -- in a single stack, said Jim Zemlin, executive director of The Linux Foundation.
"You have a really complicated supply chain, where you might get source code coming from lots of different places, whether it is a chipset vendor, a mobile handset provider or embedded software vendor," he said. "Managing open source license compliance is complicated."
Many companies are unaware of how different software licensing works with open source, or their executives fear being forced to divulge their own software code because it was intermingled with some open source code under the Gnu Public License (GPL). SAP, for instance, has set up an open source office and program specifically to deal with such issues.
"What we were looking for is [a way] to solve this complexity and to prevent needless lawsuits," Zemlin said. "Our community has the exact same goal that the industry has, to make using open source as low-cost and as easy as possible."
The Linux Foundation's program provides a range of tools and services to get such companies up to speed, Zemlin said.
The program includes a self-assessment check-list (available in late 2010), training programs, software tools that check programs for open source licensing or other issues, a community workgroup, a compliance directory of companies using open source software, and a new standard, called the Software Package Data Exchange (SPDX), that can be used to create a packing list of all supporting software components within an application.
All these services, except for the training courses, will be free, Zemlin said.
Organizations such as Adobe, Advanced Micro Devices, Cisco Systems, Google, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Motorola, Novell, Samsung, the Software Freedom Law Center and Sony Electronics have endorsed this program.

Encrypt Stick Free

Encrypt Stick is one of the most secure and least intrusive ways to encrypt sensitive data. It leaves no footprint on your (or others') PC, because it resides on and runs off a flash drive, and will run on both PCs and Macs. It also uses polymorphic encryption (the algorithm will change for each device it runs from) that the company claims is 10 times faster than 256-bit AES, and even provides a nifty virtual keyboard to prevent keylogging of any sort.
I didn't find the program particularly easy to install or learn, but it's quite simple to use once you're up to speed. My problem with the installation was that I didn't realize there isn't any--the program is actually portable. After puzzling for a few minutes I realized my mistake, ran the program from a flash drive, and was good to go. The Encrypt Stick interface could use a modicum of improvement; there was truncated text at 120DPI, and the virtual keyboard icon was rather unintuitive. The vendor, ENC Security Systems, says it will take care of these issues in short order.
Once you're accustomed to the heavy use of right-click context menus, all that's required is to drag files to and from the flash drive where Encrypt Stick creates its default vault, i.e. encrypted archive. You can also create vaults on other drives (including internal hard drives), but the flash drive to which you installed the program acts as the key. That is, it must present on the system and you must enter the password it prompts you for when you run the .exe file (it will autorun if your system is configured for that) before you can access files in any of the vaults created with it. You may also export files that will remain encrypted until they're dragged back to a vault. I tried Encrypt Stick with several 100MB video files and found it operated at about the same speed or faster than an archiving utility.
Even if you don't need encryption for your files, Encrypt Stick's secure virtual keyboard is a must-see. It has multiple keys for each character, character locations shift around with each virtual key press, and when the mouse is over a virtual key, its label disappears. How the bad guys would log this thing I have no idea. In the spirit of the Three Stooges, I plan to try it out on some unsuspecting friends after a few rounds of drinks.
Encrypt Stick also includes a handy password manager that eventually will include an integrated Webkit-based browser to launch and log you in automatically to Web sites. There's even a "boss" key that will hide the program immediately should you sense the presence of prying eyes near your computer.
The more I used Encrypt Stick, the more it impressed me. The free version is limited to 20MB of storage, one group of passwords, etc. but it's still quite useful. There's a full feature comparison between the free version and the $40 full version, which is aimed at corporate and government users, on the company's Web site. It's a small download for such an amazing set of features--and you must try the keyboard.

Microsoft launches Apple-baiting PC vs. Mac site

Perhaps it was the sight of Justin Long and John Hodgman wafting into the night, dragging their jokes behind them, that made Microsoft feel a little bolder.
Yes, now that the "Get a Mac" campaign seems to have been retired by Apple, Microsoft has launched a touching attempt to reverse some of Apple's sweet and amusing put-downs.
Microsoft's new creation is a site called "PC versus Mac". Yet if you're looking for a joke or two as you weigh up your options, you will have to search very, very hard. There are no images of bespectacled gray-bearded men in loose Levi's. There are no stray comments about antennas or fanboys.
The site is a very anodyne affair. Garlanded with an image of a presumably perplexed woman who is, perhaps, worrying whether she is cool enough to buy a Mac, it offers straight comparisons of facts and entirely unbiased opinions.

You might not have been aware, but "Macs might spoil your fun." Not because they cost so much that you won't be able to afford a restaurant dinner for the next six months, but because, the site says, "there are some things you simply can't do out of the box with a Mac like watch, pause, rewind, and record TV like a DVR."
Macs are just dull, it seems. "You can't get a Mac that ships with a Blu-ray player, TV tuner, Memory Stick reader, or built-in 3G wireless. You can with PCs running Windows 7." And just try connecting your Mac with an XBox 360. That's a lot more difficult than connecting Naomi Campbell to a blood diamond.
The site goes on to offer other areas in which Macs are allegedly inferior: simplicity, working hard, sharing, compatibility ("Macs might not like your PC stuff." Really? Why would that be?) and choice.
It's a most edifying presentation. Or it would be if the site was designed to be slightly more engaging than a leaflet advertising a local beauty parlor that came through my Mom's letter box in 1981.
Microsoft took Apple's criticism on the chin and in many areas below that for a very long time. Many PC lovers wished that the company would have fought back. However, now that it does, one does get the impression that this is like a mouse sticking its nose out of a very small hole, still fearing there are large feral cats nearby.
Some might find humor in the site's suggestion that one of the major differences between Macs and PCs is that "Macs can take time to learn." But this dry presentation might impress those of a nerdy bent rather more than the general public.
They're emotional, you see. They prefer laughter. Or at least a love story.

Apple has begun taking orders for its latest range of Mac Pros, with the 12-Core version of the computer now available for pre-order.
Although it will take two weeks, the store is now open for those who want a Mac Pro, which is boasting 50 per cent improvement in processing power.
Announced at the end of July, the Mac Pro offers 12 cores, via two six-core 3.33GHz Intel Xeon, ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB graphics, and a 1TB hard drive.
Dirty dozen
If you are looking to splash out, then you can purchase a new 12-Core Mac Pro with every available extra feature – including adding solid state drives, a bundle of software, extra LED monitor and a printer – for a jaw-dropping £18,296.84.
For those who just want the base model, then expect to pay around the £4,000 mark.
Also available to order are the new Quad- and 8-Core range, which aren't as headline grabbing but still powerful bits of kit.

Twitter Hopes to Retire 'Fail Whale' With Custom-Built Data Center

Twitter has announced that it will be working toward consolidating management of its data centers within its own organization. The company's first custom-built data center, located in the Salt Lake City area, will fire up later this year.

Twitter will keep its relationship with NTT America to maintain its current operational capacity, said Jean-Paul Cozzatti on the Twitter Engineering blog. However, he listed numerous advantages to taking data center operation in-house and noted that more Twitter-owned and operated facilities will be built during the next two years.

Whale Fail Woes

Anyone who has used the Twitter service recognizes the amicable whale held aloft by little birds -- affectionately and not-so-affectionately known as the "Whale Fail" screen. Twitter is "over capacity," announces the whale, making the friendly suggestion that the Twitter user try posting again soon. While Twitter hasn't released official figures on the rate the Whale Fail screen appears, anecdotal reports suggest many users see it at least once a day.
In its two years of operation, the Twitter service has expanded from a base of young, trendy, for-fun users to inclusion of a wide range of businesses and organizations. Public libraries, government offices, accounting firms -- all these and more use the Twitter service to announce programs, services, and even time-sensitive information like changes in hours of operation.
The home screen of the Twitter website now displays a rolling marquee of "trending" topics -- tweets that are receiving the most traffic . Celebrities make announcements, and refute them, in this public space.
Thus, the service that once was a novelty has become an integral part of the communications infrastructure for a wide range of users, commercial and not.
"Twitter has become an important tool for professionals and marketers," Greg Sterling, founder and principal of Sterling Market Intelligence, told TechNewsWorld. As such, it can't afford to be seen an unreliable or operating below capacity.

Blessing and Curse

Twitter's user base is growing by about 300,000 accounts per day, said Cozzatti in his blog post, and the systems engineering challenges inherent in that kind of growth are unique.
To manage the operational needs more precisely and shift resources more quickly, Twitter needs to both own and operate the data centers, he said.
In fact, the ability to add capacity is crucial to Twitter's success, stressed Sterling. The service needs to minimize failures and outages. In the case of a real-time messaging service based on both Web and SMS platforms, any unavailability or delay in transmitting tweets could be viewed as an outage.
In addition, establishing loyalty with a user base that's increasingly moving to mobile platforms is very important, Josh Martin, senior analyst with Strategy Analytics, told TechNewsWorld. Once a user gets established on any social networking service, it's difficult to consider a change. Twitter, by its nature, is positioned to make deep inroads into the rapidly growing market of smartphone users, because it can send messages via SMS or a wide range of Twitter apps available for all smartphone platforms.
"Mobile devices will sell more units than PCs ever did," Martin stressed. It stands to follow, then, that the traffic created by that exponentially larger user base will require the ability to add capacity quickly and perhaps often.
Twitter's new data center will operate with an open source operating system and application software, said Cozzatti.
Hardware will come from a variety of vendors. The custom-designed facility will provide Twitter with the ability to design redundancy into its network architecture so that failsafe measures can ensure reliability in the service.
The Salt Lake City center will, off the bat, establish a larger footprint than Twitter currently has with NTT America and thus add capacity at the outset, explained Cozzatti. It will also allow Twitter to better control the environmental aspects of its data operations, such as power and cooling.

What's Google's Deal?

This week, three of the biggest newspapers in the U.S. either exposed Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) as a two-faced liar of a corporation, or published significant falsehoods that could seriously undermine the company and its investors.
